"Empowering Perioperative Nurses 2010: Update your professional practice toolkit"

Our 11th Ontario Provincial Conference was held April 25-28th 2010 in Niagara at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel and Conference Centre. The conference was attended by 195 plus delegates over two and a half days of meetings. I believe that all delegates would agree that it was a huge success; meeting our educational needs, supplying us with opportunities to view our Industry partners' exhibits, and allowing us time to socialize, network and learn from one another.

Opening ceremonies started with a bang from the percussionist of Saint Paul's band and vocalists group which provided the accompaniment to the processional and the presentation of the regional flags. Greetings from the chair followed by other notable dignitaries including the Mayor of Niagara, Ted Salci, opened the conference and provided an opportunity to set the mood for the days that followed. An inspiring video showcased the many faces of the OR nurse beginning with everyday heroes.

The opening keynote speaker, sponsored by JJMP, was Meg Soper who delivered a presentation taking us through the stuff that happens every day in an OR shedding light on the humorous side; Wit, Fit and Balance……Strategies for Success. Other topics covered throughout the conference were: Safety Information for Patients, Working together to Build a Workplace Full of Respect-Transforming Operating Room Culture, The Evolution of a Professional Association (PNEC), Measuring Perioperative Nurse's Competence and Building a Stronger Future, Implementation of Computerized Documentation in Perioperative Areas- A Collaborative Multidisciplinary Approach, We Talk Out Loud in Front of Our Patients and are Proud of it!- Our Success Story of Implementing the SSCL Checklist, Current Perspectives and Future Trends in Regional Anesthesia, Perioperative Preceptor Education- A Tool for Succession Planning, VOCERA: Voice Recognition Comes to the OR, Perioperative Acting Lessons; Simulation and Debriefing to Enhance Practice, Patient and Family Centered Care in the Perioperative Setting, Cancel the OR- Surge Capacity and Pandemic Planning, Operating Room Nursing Practice Council; An Effective Clinical Practice Decision Making Model, Medication Errors in the OR: What you cannot afford to ignore, Utilization of Learning Management System- An Online Learning Delivery and Tracking System, Joy of Work for Health Care Professionals: Keys to Find More Fulfillment in Your Work, Intergenerational Leadership in Perioperative Settings and The Fire Drill- So You Think You Can Evacuate. Our closing keynote speaker, also sponsored by JJMP, was Jody Urquhart. Jody provided us with the ability to laugh at life and deal with daily disappointments and setbacks. She showed us how humor helps us stay in control and maintain balance and perspective.

There were 14 posters on display in the exhibit area which were judged by our peers. All posters were thought provoking and informative making the contest exciting. First prize of $250.00 went to 'The Bone Anchored Hearing Aid: A Case Study to Explore the Meaning of Surgery for a Patient with Sudden Single-Sided Hearing Loss' by Wendy DiTrani RN, MScN, CPN(C), ORNGT, second prize of $150.00 went to 'Perioperative Nursing Practice for the Paediatric Liver Transplant Population' by Christina Carr RN, BScN; Patricia Gilray RN, HBScN; E.Hempel RN, HBScN; and M.Lachia RN, BScN, ORNGT, and the third prize of $100.00 was won by 'Operating Room Supply Chain (and my OCD)' by Dawn Korol RN, CPN(C).

The exhibit hall was filled with 56 booths displaying products for delegates to see and touch as they strolled through. The displays were phenomenal, ranging from basic products to new technology. Winners of the completed exhibitor passport were:

  • 1st Karen Rogers, for $250.00
  • 2nd Ray Meyer, for $150.00
  • 3rd Steve Grant, for $100.00

Prizes for the passport were generously donated by OPEAC.

During the exhibit hours each day, OPEAC also had a draw for three $300.00 educational sponsorship awards. The winners this year were:

  • Monday: Nina Brown, Annalee Szabadi, Elizabeth Long
  • Tuesday: Marylou Lim, Brigette Loeppky, Kim McKinlay

The 2010 Exhibitors committee under the Presidency of Yarko Horvath (JJMP) did an excellent job of supporting the conference committee with their work and finding sponsorship for events. A very heartfelt "Thank you" goes to Yarko and the rest of the OPEAC committee: Colin DeSouza (AMT Electrosurgery), Dave Haley (Medtronics of Canada), Janie Enright (Teleflex Medical) & Lisa Mackie (3M Canada) who gave of their time to attend meetings and ensure everything was in place for a successful conference.

Our social events this year were spectacular: starting with the cocktail party on Sunday night providing an opportunity to showcase Niagara's fine wines. Monday night's event located at the spectacular Elements of the Falls did not let anyone down with the sun showing through the clouds and a very large rainbow showing of the falls; a truly wonderful photo opportunity. Transportation to and from this venue was generously provided by OPEAC in the form of a double-decker bus. Dinner included local specialties and the night was capped of by the ORNAO colour lighted up behind the falls. The party continued late into the night with the sounds of music by DJ Funky (Joe Carusone). Tuesday night provided an opportunity for all delegates to experience Niagara Falls at it's finest with good food a friends whether it be at the Skylon Tower, on the Maid of the Mist or at the Fallsview Casino.

I must thank the ORNAO executive and board, who gave tirelessly of their time to perform both hostess and moderator duties. Lastly, I must give a huge "THANK YOU" to my planning committee who made the conference a raging success through their hard work and dedication.

Sincere thanks
Joanna Schubert- Conference Chair
